Humak Students

The Tornio unit, although being geographically the northernmost part of the Humak University of Applied Sciences in Finland, is a modern, international polytechnic that has the programme in the Civic Activities and Youth Work. Our main emphasis is on Adventure Education, international studies and social inclusion. The total number of the students on the campus is app. three hundred, hundred and seventy of which are polytechnic students and the rest on the secondary level. We welcome groups of exchange students every year to participate in the adventure education and international study programmes. The main value of the teaching principles is the guiding of the student in a close relationship with the lecturers in their studies so that the final responsibility is, however, carried for their individual choices by the students themselves.
Civic Activities and Youth Work Degree Programme
At the Humak University of Applied Sciences there are three different programmes and every unit  has its own profile. The purpose of the HUMAK is to provide its students with possibilities to evolve into professionals in their chosen fields.
The Tornio Unit specializes in:
Adventure Education
International Studies
Social Inclusion
Location
The Town of Tornio, established in 1621, is situated in the Tornio River Valley only ten minutes from the Swedish border town Haparanda in the province of Lapland. These two towns form together an area called Provincia Bothniensis and Euro City. There are app. 23 000 inhabitants in Tornio and app. 10 000 inhabitants in Haparanda. The Kemi airport facilitates rapid flight connections abroad.
Facilities
Our accommodation capacity is 150 beds. There are both single and twin rooms available and even two rooms furnished to accommodate handicapped students. The residential halls are modern and equipped with shared kitchens and lounges. The students have access to the swimming pool and there are several saunas on the campus. The unit is located by the Tornio river, thus access to the water sport such as canooing and kayaking is easy. In the summer we have a beach volley court. We also have a large sports hall on the campus. There is also a climbing wall for the more adventurous. The equipment and the teaching facilities are modern and there are two computer rooms.
Leisure Activities
There are sports and ball halls as well as a swimming hall close to the campus. There are also possibilities for bowling and golf. For those who want more excitement in their lives the rapids of Kukkolankoski only 15 km north offer an opportunity to try river rafting. In Haparanda, the Swedish border town, there are two large sports halls, Aspen for the athletics and Kuben for icehockey and skating. There are many chances for downhill skiing in the winter. Lapland and its fells are a skier’s paradise. There are also many sights close to Tornio, e.g. the largest winter snow castle in the world and the icebreaker Sampo.
