Cultural Management Degree Programme
Cultural Management (70 ECTS)
The Degree Programme in Cultural Management offers courses in English in the area of cultural management. During the academic year 2007–2008, students can complete up to 70 ECTS of studies within the degree programme. The course offering for Autumn 2007 (September–December, Periods 1–3a) includes 30 ECTS, while Spring 2008 (January–June, Periods 3b–6) includes 40 ECTS.
The courses are offered on the four campuses providing instruction in cultural management. Instruction is provided in Turku during Periods 1–3a, in Korpilahti during Period 3b, in Kauniainen during Period 4 and in Joutseno during Period 5. Students are free to choose the location of their work placement (Period 6).
The course offering is subject to changes.

Content: Students are familiarised with the Finnish system of higher education. They learn the basics of Finnish culture, history and society. Students also learn to use Humak’s virtual campus.

Course:Cultural Entrepreneurship, Credits:5 ECTS
Content:Students become familiar with the basics of cultural entrepreneurship. This course provides students with professional competence, and enables them to sell their skills topotential employers or to employ themselves.

Course:Project, Credits:5 ECTS
Content:Students carry out a project during their stay at the Turku campus (period 1-3a). They work in one group or in couple of groups. Project is related to cultural production and it is enabled and strengthened through the other studies at the same time. The subject of the project is decided together among the students. Closing and realisation of the project is carried out during the period 3a.

Course:Art and Culture in Finnish Society, Credits: 4 ECTS
Content:The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the Finnish cultural policy and the state of art and culture in the Finnish society. The students get to know some art and culture organizations in Central Finland. One part of the course is to study the Finnish folklore and Kalevala and to considere the meaning of the local culture and identity as part of EU. Course also includes Finnish lessons.

Course:Cultural Exports, Credits:10 ECTS
Content:Students are introduced to Finnish cultural exports, especially from the perspective of music exports. Students learn about activities related to the principles, marketing, distribution and production of cultural exports.

Course:Festival and Event Expertise, Credits:8 ECTS
Content:A) Arts Festivals in Finland (2 ECTS): To familiarize the student with arts festivals in Finland (festival as a cultural phenomenon, festival organizations, funding, programming, audiences)B) Finno-Ugrian Cultures (1 ECTS): To familiarize the student with Finno-Ugrian cultures (peoples, languages, arts and culture)C) Project work (4 ECTS): To participate and produce Kulttuurikorento-project, which improves children’s knowledge of artsD) Finnish Arts (1 ECTS): To familiarize the student with Finnish arts from the viewpoint of visual art.

Content:To explore the role and influence of cultures on human communication and working behaviour, get familiar with basic intercultural communication theories, develop student’s intercultural awareness

Content:Students complete a work placement project in their chosen cultural organisation. The work placement can be completed in an organisation closely related to the activities of the Joutseno, Kauniainen, Korpilahti or Turku units.

Civic Activities and Youth Work
Adventure Education 2007 course (19,5 ECTS) at HUMAK Tornio Campus 3 Sept – 30 Nov 2007
Objectives: Students will gain experiences in adventure education and understanding of the theories in experiential learning and adventure education. Students will learn skills and knowledge that they can develop in adventure education. Student will gain understanding of the importance of technical skills and educational knowledge in order to lead and facilitate safe and purposeful adventure activities. After the course students will understand the purpose of adventure education as a tool for improving personal growth and method for strengthening group dynamics.
Contents: Students will participate actively in contact lessons where practical skills are learned, such as camping, hiking, climbing, kayaking and winter skills. Based on these skills students will also learn about leadership, instruction, risk management, decision making, and trip planning skills. Knowledge of environmental awareness, local culture and Finnish language are integrated to all topics. Students will also have an opportunity to create a project or an event by using adventure education methods. Individual experiences and group experiences will be used as debriefing topics and practical activities will be connected to the theories. Cultural integration will be part of the course as the activities and lessons are taught in times with Finnish students.
Methods of study: Contact learning, group projects and independent studying.
Evaluation: Evaluation is based on participation and written assignments.
Prerequisites: a good health and a reasonable physical condition is recommended since majority of the studying is based on outdoor activities, such as hiking, kayaking and climbing.

Fees: None. But transportation to different learning environments will be student’s responsibility.

Work and Theory Together Course 2007 (22 ECTS) 27 Aug 2007 – 30 Nov 2007
Objectives: This course is intended for international exchange students who come to study at HUMAK in Lohja or Nurmijärvi via Erasmus bilateral exchange programs. The course combines theoretical studies with practical work experience in different types of work placement environments in the field of youth work and voluntary organisations. During the course, an exchange student and a degree student from HUMAK work and study together as a pair in the same work placement organisation (peer support). The course includes theoretical contact studies (7 ECTS), a work placement period (12 ECTS) and independent study (3 ECTS). The core idea of the course is to learn from and during the work placement by using an inquiry-based learning method. The contact instruction days are used for work supervision and for supporting the students’ learning.
Basic modules (12 ECTS):
1) Introduction to University Studies, Work Placement, Finland, Greater Helsinki Region, and Introduction to Finnish (2 ECTS)
2) Introduction to Inquiry-Based Learning (10 ECTS)
Objective: Students are introduced to an inquiry-based approach, and they learn to use it during the work placement. Having completed the theme, students are able to produce and evaluate information analytically. They understand the idea and significance of the approach as part of their professional development and the development of communities. The theme offers the perspective of inquiry-based learning to developing professional practices.
Optional modules (10 ECTS):
In addition to completing the basic modules, students choose either one 10 ECTS module or two 5 ECTS modules to be completed during the work placement. The field and nature of the work placement have to be considered when choosing the module.
