The Lohja unit

The Lohja unit is a lively, modern University of Applied Sciences offering a study programme in Civic Activities and Youth Work. In addition to the 3.5 year programme in higher education we also house students working on a secondary level programme in Youth Work and Recreation, a one-year programme in fine arts and a one-year programme for those wanting to improve the academic record of their compulsory basic education. All in all our student body is 300, at present 90 of these belong to The Humanities Polytechnic. We value independent thinking in our students and our teaching philosophy relies heavily on constructivism and self-directed learning.

Location

The University is 6 km from the city centre of Lohja and the bus connections take you there and back in a matter of minutes. Lohja is a busy industrial and trade centre that has retained its cosy atmosphere as a small town surrounded by varied and beautiful nature.

Facilities

About one third of our students live on campus. At present our accommodation capacity is 130 beds in dormitories that have been refurbished quite recently.

Leisure activities

Our location in a rural setting, by the beautiful Lake Horma offers ample opportunities for relaxation after a hard day of studying. It is also a suitable surrounding for our adventure trail, which is an essential element of our outdoor education. On the waterfront we have two log saunas; and swimming and taking sauna baths is an all year past time for students and staff alike. In the winter we drill a hole in the ice to take a refreshing dip after the heat of the steam room.

Lohja boasts a wide range of sporting opportunities: there is a leisure centre with an all-year ice- rink, tennis courts, a sports field, a bowling alley, one of the city´s several fitness clubs and the Spa Neidonkeidas. The ridge area in the city centre has excellent trails for skiing in winter and walking in summer. For those of you who enjoy the pleasures of city life, Lohja is less than an hour drive from Helsinki, the capital of Finland.
