The Joensuu Unit
The Humak University of Applied Sciences Joensuu Unit was attached to Humak in autumn 1999. In 2004-2005, the unit has appr. 100 students. The content of degree programme is 210 ECTS (3,5 years). So far, 75 students have graduated from the unit, and started their professional career as Community Educators.
The Humak Joensuu Unit offers education in Degree Programme in Civic Activities and Youth Work. The aim of the programme is to produce professionals who are competent in extensive human contact in the field of community and youth work. The programme provides competence in instructional, expert, supervisory, educational, and planning tasks.
The unit offers specialization studies in social inclusion. Specialization studies include, among others, theory, methods and project work for empowering individuals and communities.
In 2005-2006, the Joensuu Unit does not offer any full-time study programme for exchange students.
Facilities & leisure activities
Total number of permanent staff is 6 (5 lecturers & a study secretary). The home of Joensuu Unit is North Karelia Adult Education College, where tuition and accommodation is organized.
The students are accommodated in twin rooms at the campus. The residential halls are modern with shower and kitchen facilities.
There are good opportunities for swimming, rowing, skiing and hiking. Concerts, theatre, art exhibitions and cinemas are available in the city of Joensuu. Historical traits of Finnish Karelianism and the Orthodox religion still survive in the region: for example the monastries of New Valamo in Heinävesi, the house of a traditional singer of oral poetry in Ilomantsi, and the national heritage landscape, the Koli National Park.
A local students’ association, JYHO (Student Association of the Humak Joensuu Unit), organises both leisure time activities as well as advocacy work related to students’ issues.
Location
The unit is located in Finland's eastern most province in Pyhäselkä commune, only 15 kilometres from the provincial capital Joensuu. Of the 175 000 inhabitants of Northern Karelia, Joensuu has 51 700. The city of Joensuu, on the border of eastern and western culture, is known as a lively student city and versatile cultural and leisure service centre. Also the nature with its hills and lakes is a central part of Northern Karelia.
