Location

Haapavesi unit is situated in the centre of the town Haapavesi beside the river Pyhäjoki in the southern part of the Province of Oulu. There are about 8000 inhabitants in Haapavesi and the town is often known as ”The Pearl of Ostrobothnia” and it is indeed an area of great natural beauty with a river, numerous lakes and pleasant, rolling countryside. Haapavesi is also a venue for musical events in summer. Every year the International Haapavesi Folk Music Festival and related courses attract participants from all over Europe. As the home of that typically Finnish instrument, the Kantele (a form of harp) Haapavesi holds contests in its honour every second year.

Facilities

There are two halls of residence with comfortable lounges and kitchens on the campus. The accommodation capacity is 92 beds. Apart from these halls of residence there is a student block of flats with 52 beds about 500 metres off-campus. Most of the rooms are double rooms, also some single rooms are available.

Leisure Activities

Haapavesi offers a wide variety of leisure time opportunities. It has a modern swimming pool and sports hall with gymnasia and squash courts, tennis courts, jogging tracks, shooting range, motor sports centre and riding stables. The very varied countryside and unspoilt nature of the area provide excellent opportunities for hunting, fishing and hiking.
The strong cultural traditions of Haapavesi are seen in its educational facilities and musical activities. There are lots of musical groups for both beginners and more advanced music makers in Haapavesi: a chamber orchestra and various fiddler and kantele groups and choirs. The local open college offers a wide range of hobby circles too.
